The BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy Oceania 2020 was the seventh in the event’s history. The 2020 edition saw participants endure eight days that were physically and mentally demanding as they traversed more than 2500km of the course that extended from the North to South islands that make up New Zealand. This hugely popular off-road motorcycling competition was won by Team South Africa who claimed the prestigious title for the third year running after also previously winning it in South East Asia and Central Asia. For the 2020 off-road BMW Motorrad motorcycling event held in the Southern hemisphere, the competition put the experience and off-road riding skills of 22 international teams representing more than 40 countries from around the globe to the test. As the event was held during the summer, riders could make the most of a temperate climate on most days. This is not to say there weren’t any challenges as riders also had to put up with having to deal with the typical unique Kiwi phenomenon – experiencing four seasons in a single day.
In addition to plummeting temperatures, riders also had to battle rainy and windy conditions on the course track. If this was not enough, they were also put through their paces at sea level and when up in the alpine passes.
Riders enjoyed their experience of the BMW F 850 GS at the off-road motorcycling competition, reporting that it handled well on the various types of terrain. Much was also made of new rider-assist features such as the TFT screen that was praised for the useful information it provided as well as being easy to read. Other notable plus points included the suspension and engine power production.
